Pre-Jordan

In the sacrament of Christian initiation called baptism we are freed from the power of darkness and joined to Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. We receive the Spirit of filial adoption and are part of the entire people of God in the celebration of the memorial of the Lord's death and resurrection.

Jesus said to St. John during his baptism at the river Jordan, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15); On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens; “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1: 10-11)

What then is Pre-Jordan?

Pre-Jordan takes its name from the above scripture readings and is thus meant to teach new families about the conversion process of baptism. Pre-Jordan then is a moment of catechesis for new parents, new members of the parish, and parents who have not had a baptism in four or more years. It is St. John’s equivalent to the Catholic Church’s response to the Sacrament of Baptism Preparation. Families who fit these criteria will be contacted by a Pre-Jordan Catechist upon the initial scheduling of your child’s baptism.

Pre-Jordan Visit

The Pre-Jordan visit is the sacrament of baptism catechesis. The Pre-Jordan Catechist will contact you and ask to meet with you either at your home or at the church.  It is meant to take about one and a half hours to complete.  At the visit you can expect to learn about the sacrament of baptism, be asked initial questions about baptism, learn about your responsibility as the first and foremost educators of your child’s faith and learn what it means to be the “Domestic Church”.

You will also go over the rite of baptism in order to familiarize yourself with your child’s baptism and the liturgy of the mass.

Opportunities to become a Pre-Jordan Catechist

St. John’s has many baptisms each year and the need for volunteers is greatly needed. St. John’s is always looking for individuals who are interested in helping with this ministry.  Each Pre-Jordan Catechist is trained in the procedures and processes of this ministry.  It is a spiritual rewarding ministry for the catechist and all who serve enjoy meeting the new families as holding the new babies.

If you would like to become a Pre-Jordan Catechist please call Kevin Kroeber at 387-6928 or email him.
