Generations of Faith is our primary education program at St. John's. Centered in Christ and based on the teaching mission of the church, GOF offers an integrated plan for lifelong learning to all in our parish family.
The Generations of Faith approach equips the parish to become a community of learners by creating life long faith formation that is based on the events of Church life and embraces all ages and generations. Generations of Faith promotes faith growth at home, through parish preparation programs, and, most importantly, through participation in Church life.
The Church is both the curriculum and teacher, and we are all teachers and learners. The Generations of Faith Curriculum systematically and comprehensively presents the Gospel Message and Catholic tradition through 6 major content areas: Church Year Feasts and Seasons, Sacraments, Justice and Service, Morality, Prayer and Spirituality, and the Creed. Each time a content area is revisited, it is presented from a different theological perspective, and guides learners to deeper understanding and fuller participation in the life of the church.
Thus learners of all ages continue to grow in their faith, build community within the parish, and develop patterns of learning and praying at home that last throughout their lives.
Generations of Faith "How To's":
- Generations of Faith is our parish education program. It is different from youth only programming in that all generations attend, and there is learning across age levels. Parents' presence sends an immediate message of the importance of growing in your faith!! Older adults and young adults presence enriches our learning and sharing. In addition, Generations offers lifelong learning, with sessions organized around the 6 foundational themes of our faith. All households are welcome, whether you are a household of 1 or 12!!
- Participation cost is $15.00 per person PER YEAR, with a cap of $65.00. (2 adults: $30.00, parent and 3 children: $60.00, etc.)
- You may register at the September or October GOF Sessions, or pick up a registration form online or in the elevator entrance to send in.
- You may attend the evening of your choice each month, depending on your households' schedule.
- Generations of Faith always begins in Matthews Hall with a meal and introduction to the topic, and ends in the church where we pray together. The opening and closing enhance your experience and add to your learning, so plan to be at both!
- Students in Sacramental Preparation programs (grades 2, 9, & 10) meet one other time per month, and will receive a separate calendar for those sessions.
- There are always Home Materials to take with you. The use of these materials is an important part of your learning and reflection. Suggestions for their use will be in the weekly bulletin.
- We welcome all to our monthly sessions. Generations of Faith is for learning together as a parish family, participating in church events with more knowledge and understanding, and carrying the learning and reflection to our homes, schools and places of work.
